Sauk County
Probate Records
Probate records consist of
the documents that settle an estate after someone’s death,
whether they died with a will (testate) or without one (intestate).
Probate records are important to genealogists because they can
provide important information about other family members and
the estate of the deceased.
Probate records may include
but are not limited to:
- A will, if there was one
- A petition for an executor
or administrator
- Amendments or codicils to
the will
- Probate of the will
- A list of heirs
- An inventory of the
deceased’s estate at time of death
- A report of the committee
for partition when heirs cannot agree amongst themselves
about how to divide the estate
- Receipts from heirs
- A closing statement by the
court
The Sauk County Historical
Society holds all Sauk County probate records prior to 1916.
